Vailsburg is a neighborhood in the West ward of Newark, New Jersey. Vailsburg is divided into Upper and Lower Vailsburg by Sanford Ave (Lower Vailsburg is to the east). Upper Vailsburg is also known as the Ivy Hill neighborhood. Vailsburg is bordered by East Orange, Irvington, South Orange, and Maplewood. Vailsburg is a section of the West Ward, but it stands out from the rest of Newark like a peninsula due to the Garden State Parkway on its eastern border.
There are two major parks in Vailsburg-Ivy Hill Park and in the western section of Vailsburg and Vailsburg Park in the eastern section. The Vailsburg branch of the Newark Public Library is located in this neighborhood. Vailsburg has a significant stock of Dutch Colonial and Victorian inspired homes. Upper Vailsburg consists largely of single-family homes, while Lower Vailsburg consists of both single-family and two-family housing units. The area is also home to the Ivy Hill Apartments, New Jersey's largest rental complex. Vailsburg is also home to numerous schools, places of worship, community groups and block associations.
